When do the leaves peak around West Jefferson?

The National Park Service says most trees along the Blue Ridge Parkway change color in October. It starts early in the month on the highest peaks and moves down into the valleys. The Fall Color Guy, Dr. Howard Neufeld, says color usually peaks around mid-October between 2,500 and 4,000 feet. So around West Jefferson, color usually peaks in mid to late October.

Exact dates shift every year. A warm fall can push color back by a few days to two weeks. With Mount Jefferson above town and the valleys below, you can follow the color up or down.

This year's color so far

2026 is running late. A warm September slowed things down, and Neufeld expects about two days of delay for every degree above normal. He put nearby Boone's peak around the third week of October. As of October 10, color is building on the highest peaks. Around West Jefferson it isn't at peak yet.

His advice: "If you miss the colors at one elevation, just come next week and go a little lower down."

Why elevation matters

Mountain air cools about 3.3°F for every 1,000 feet you climb, according to the Fall Color Guy's peak color map. Cooler air brings color sooner.

Downtown West Jefferson sits at about 3,000 feet. Our cabins are a little higher, at about 3,100. Mount Jefferson rises to 4,465 feet, almost 1,500 feet above town. By that math it runs about 5°F cooler, so the summit usually turns first. Go up for early color. Stay low as the season moves down.
